Posted on February 17th, 2022

Walker Filtration are proud to announce that our UK Head Office has once again been shortlisted at this year’s Insider ‘Made in the North-East Awards’, which celebrate the most prestigious and innovative manufacturing businesses of the region.

Sustainable / Ethical Manufacturer Award:

Our dedication to creating a more sustainable future for Walker Filtration, the local community, and the environment was recognised by the judges who have shortlisted us for the ‘Sustainable / Ethical Manufacturer Award’. In the past year we have undertaken several projects aimed at minimising our environmental impact as a manufacturer, including the installation of 1630 PV panels at our UK Headquarters in Washington in March 2021. Since our PV Panel energy dashboard went live in May, we have generated 365,690KwH of solar energy to date.

Energy efficiency and sustainability is also a key long-term consideration when developing our product portfolio and formulating our production processes. Our R&D and Engineering teams are continually working to ensure that our products are market leading in terms of energy efficiency and performance, helping to minimise Walker Filtration’s environmental impact from manufacture through to end use.

Sustainability is, and always will be, a core focus of the Walker Filtration group, and we strive to lead the way in ethical manufacturing in our industry.

Apprentice Of the Year:

Walker Filtration have three different nominees shortlisted for the ‘Apprentice of the Year Award’ at this year’s event, all of which are in their fourth and final year of their apprenticeship at Walker Filtration. Nominees include:

Process Engineering Apprentice, Jack Sutton, who achieved distinctions in his EAL Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Technical Support and is currently on track to complete his HNC (Level 4) in General Engineering. Gary Pears, Jack’s manager, stated, “He brings an energy and enthusiasm that impacts positively on the whole team. He can take an idea for improvement, run with it, and introduce it fully, from analysis through to execution.”

Maintenance and Operations Engineering Apprentice, Morgan Pearce. Having previously being shortlisted for the award in 2020, Morgan has already completed her BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering achieving all distinctions and is currently working towards her HNC (Level 4) in Electrical Engineering. Morgan is professional, hands-on and willing to go above and beyond her role as apprentice to get the job done. Morgan always remains calm and collected, even under pressure, and contributes over and above what would be expected of her age and experience.

Our third Apprentice to be nominated for the ‘Apprentice of the Year Award’ is Design Engineering Apprentice, Holly Charlton-Rowell. Holly is currently working towards her Level 3 in Engineering design and draughtsperson standard on a medical pathway. Engineering Manager, Martin Harbottle, said, “Holly has made a large contribution to company by applying the technical knowledge and principles she has learned – her day-to-day support of technical products ensures the engineering which goes into these products is world class.”

We are extremely proud with the achievements our apprentices have accomplished in their field, and we wish them the best of luck on the outcome of the Award.

Manufacturing Apprenticeship / Training Scheme Award:

Further to this, Walker Filtration were also nominated for the Manufacturing Apprenticeship / Training Scheme Award. Further highlighting our commitment to creating opportunities and clear career progression for all individuals within the business, as well as showing the ambition we have in training and upskilling our workforce.

The winners are set to be announced on the 24th March 2022, at the annual awards dinner held at The Hilton, Newcastle Gateshead.
